Why international energy storage companies are starting to look more closely at Brazil

Brazil has become one of the world's most important renewable energy markets, particularly in wind and solar. Now, another opportunity is beginning to attract attention: Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

According to Wood Mackenzie, Latin America's energy storage market could grow from 2.5 GW in 2025 to 34 GW by 2035. Chile is currently the most developed market in the region, but Brazil is starting to move.

With a large renewable generation base, growing wind and solar capacity and the development of new regulation and business models for storage, the country could become an important BESS market over the coming years.

Brazil needs its own approach

One thing I have learned from working with international companies is that Brazil cannot always be approached simply as part of a broader Latin America strategy.

It is a very large market, with its own regulation, business environment and significant differences between regions.

For companies entering the Brazilian BESS market, understanding these differences will be important.

And perhaps the first step is not simply trying to sell a technology.

It is understanding where the opportunities and the right projects are.

Renewable generation projects, utilities, large energy consumers, standalone storage and data centers could all become part of this developing market.

Projects, technology and capital

The technology already exists and international companies are increasingly looking at Brazil. At the same time, developers are studying new projects and investors familiar with renewable energy infrastructure are beginning to look at storage opportunities.

The challenge will be connecting these different parts of the market.

Technology needs projects.Projects need capital. And opportunities need the right connections.

Understanding the market comes first

Brazil's BESS market is still developing.

Regulation, business models, financing and project structures will continue to evolve, and this means that international companies entering the country need to understand the market before deciding how to position themselves.

Having someone locally following these developments, identifying opportunities, understanding the players and building relationships can make this process much more effective.

This is especially important in a market like Brazil, where business development often requires time, local knowledge and trust. The opportunity in BESS is becoming clearer. But understanding how to participate in this market may be just as important as having the right technology.
